With Mumini Abdulkareem
The Senator representing Kwara Central in the National Assembly,
Yahaya Ibrahim Oloriegbe has reportedly come under online backlash for
empowering his constituent with turning sticks (Orogun) and plastic
buckets.
The senator has also been criticised for the empowerment scheme where
he reportedly presented plastics, bowls and soap to 26 women in his
constituents as startup tools.
Pictures from the empowerment programme went viral in many social
media platforms and whatsapp groups in the state weekend.
Some of the comments that criticised the gesture advised the senator
should be distributed the items as gift rather that as start up tools
for empowerment.
According to an online report on [email protected], visited last
night, “It was not also a programme solely sponsored by the senator
but rather through his wife.
The women who were made to undergo soap making and baking among other
trainings were presented with essential materials in order to put
their training into use.
When contacted, an aide of the senator who did not want his name in
print promised to get back to Pilot Politics. He was yet to do so
before the paper went to bed last night.
The senator had earlier at two different times suffered similar fate
when he appointed his daughter Hafsat, a Barrister-at-law as his
legislative aide and days later held birthday get together for his
son.
But the Senator denied the allegation then while speaking on the issue
in a telephone chat with National Pilot.
According to him, “Let me also say that aides are not political
appointment but personal staff of senators and I want to use this
opportunity to assure our people that while I have not made any
appointment now, I can assure that the four local governments under my
jurisdiction, Ilorin West, South, East and Asa, will be well taken
care of when the time comes on issue of appointments. The allegation
is from critics who were hurt from the previous government. I don’t
have anything to hide, I am a public person and committed to the
development of my community. There is FOI bill now, they can go to the
national assembly to make their findings. People that will work with
me must be from my constituency”, he had said.
