Fuel Hike: Show masses mercy for Allah to be merciful on you, Olohunoyin warns leaders

By Jimoh Sulyman
The Chief Imam of IMAN central Mosque, Irewolede, Ilorin, Sheikh Sharafdeen Olohunoyin, has frowned at the level of greed and craze for wealth among the Ulamas in the religion warning that such act will only lead to perdition and destruction in the sight of Allah (SWT).
The cleric equally admonished leaders in the state and across the country to show mercy to the masses through policies and action for Allah to replicate same on them.
Olohunoyin was speaking against the backdrop of the recent hike in fuel price and electricity tariff by operators in the country noting that it will cause untold and unbearable hardship on the masses who have endured unimaginable situations of survival especially the ongoing pandemic.
He said this during his Khutbah (Friday sermon) shortly before the traditional two unit prayer adding that some Muslims scholars have deviated from Allah’s straight path because of the greed for worldly materials.
In his words: The plague of greed incessant amongst the Ulamahs (Islamic Clerics) is highly worrisome and lamentable and scholars are deviating from the path of Allah and the teaching of Prophet Muhammad because of greed.
“The clerics that the world is looking up to for guidance and truth, have become sycophants and tools in the hands of politicians. They’re now giving wrong fatwahs (ruling) to massage the egos of the politicians that they serve. How else can one described this? It is the height of deviation that has sent many people astray.
“Our leaders should fear Almighty Allah with the unreasonable hike in the price of fuel and electricity which hasn’t been easy on common citizens. They should have mercy on the masses so that Allah will be merciful to them in return”, he added.
He further quoted from the golden tradition of the noble Prophet (SAW) that “Anybody that hoard wealth and resources without giving Allah His share (Zakat) will have their accumulation turned to snake in their graves and continue to bite them till they will be raised up for judgment”.
On the sudden resumption of schools to prepare the students for WAEC, the cleric bemoaned the development, and prayed against a mass failure harvest over.
