Tragedy: 6 die after meal in Kwara

Tragedy struck at Olori village, Bani Community of Kwara North from Thursday to Sunday when six people died after meal.

This incident has earlier claimed four lives, on Thursday, when on the following day, another person gave up the ghost and another one also passed away yesterday.

It was gathered that, two children of Alhaji Muhammed Abubakar, Umar and Kadir Muhammed started vomiting at around 4 am and were rushed to General Hospital in Igbeti on that day.

It was learnt that, they were tested and confirmed to have taken food poison.

It was also said that another grandson, Bashir Muhammed, also died as a result of the said poison.

Reacting to the matter, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara State Command, Babawale Afolabi, confirmed the death of four members of same family, as a result of food poison.

He reacted to this through chat with our reporter that the deceased died as a result of poisonous food afround 7am, on Thursday.

โ€œWe received an information about the death of two children of Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, of Olori village, Banni Community of Kwara North; Umar Mohammed 25 and Kadir Mohammed 18.

โ€œThey started vomiting around 4am on Thursday and were rushed to General Hospital, Igbeti.

โ€œThey were tested and confirmed to have taken poisonous food and died in the hospital.

โ€œAfter few minutes, the two died in the hospital,โ€ Afolabi said.

He further said that as the family members were preparing to bury their corps, one of the grandson of Abubakar; Umar Mohammed also died.

The PRO said that a team of NSCDC personnel led by the Divisional Officer, Mr Adesina Taofeek visited the family to condole with them.

โ€œAs we were with the family members, we were told another grandson, Bashiru Mohammed has been rushed to another hospital, and on getting there, he was also confirmed dead in our presence,โ€ Afolabi said.

The PRO said that the Divisional Officer, Taofeek advised other family members who took the same meal with the deceased, to go for check up at the hospital.

He said that some other members of the family were admitted at the hospital, for proper test and possible treatment to avert undesirable occurrence.

Meanwhile, the Emir and Chairman, Kaiama Traditional Council of Chiefs and Obas, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, Alhaji Shehu Mu’azu Omar has commiserated with the immediate family and community leader of Olori village, Bani over the death of six people who died of food poisoning.

The traditional ruler, while speaking with this medium in a telephone conversation, noted that he was saddened to receive the ugly news of the deaths and indeed, it was a colossal loss for not only the community alone but the entire council area and the state at large.

According to him, when a report came that about two children died of food poisoning and several others unconscious in Bani Community, I had to leave what I was doing so as to look for possible solution in order to save their lives but all efforts to no avail.

He said, they learnt that the first two victims had started vomiting around 4.00am on Thursday and were rushed to Igbeti General Hospital, Oyo State where they both tested and confirmed to have taken poison food.

“It explained that few minutes after the test, the two gave up at the hospital and while arranging for their burial, another one was rushed again to the hospital who also died instantly.

“On the course of commiserating with the family over the loss, another victim was equally rushed to another hospital and confirmed died,” he said.

The monarch, who has just been recovered from the ugly incidences in Baruten and Kaiama Local governments of Kwara North where eleven people were confirmed death after taking concoction and now six persons of food poison, urged the people to be conscious of what they’re taking in order to save them from untimely deaths.
