A retired professor of Veterinary Public Health and the first professor from Ilorin emirate, Prof. Saka Nuhu has charged government at all levels to be more proactive toward taming the scourge of insecurity in the country.
He stated this on Saturday during the annual ceremony of Skill Builders Academy held in Ilorin, the state capital.
Speaking on the theme, ‘promoting the security of school children,’ Nuru described the topic as apt and timely considering the spate of insecurity in the country.
“This year’s theme is appropriate and apt because what is happening in Nigeria today is unbelievable. The schools are being attacked by bandits. So the security of schools should be prioritized at this time.
“Government has to change its tactics. Before now in Nigeria, you don’t need to lock your doors before you sheep. But the opposite is the case today.
“So I think the theme is apt and more seminar should be held to further discuss this at each level. What is happening in some states on security is so disheartening,” the Don said.
He added that part of the way forward to stem the tide of insecurity in Nigeria is for the government to involve the people at the grassroots.
Also speaking at the event, Comrade Abdulkareem Mumini Onagun, the Special Assistant to Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRaszaq on Labour Matters, charged government to involve the traditional rulers toward finding lasting solution to the menace of insecurity in the country.
“The issue of security is everybody’s job and I think it is timely discussing it at this forum. Parents need to be conscious about their Ward’s security. It is incumbent of parents to do pay visit their children schools and have contacts of relevant management.
“Government need to be more up and doing in curbing insecurity in Nigeria. Government should get the traditional chiefs at the grassroots like Alanguas and Daudus involved. These people knows their people more, ” Onagun said.
Earlier, the Director of Skill Builders Academy, Adebayo Dan’azumi said SBA has over the years sustained the mission of the school.
“Our mission at SBA remains, making our learners stand out in the midst of their contemporaries by being more knowledgeable, more resourceful, more upright and filter for life.
“In furtherance of our noble goals and keeping with SBA’s core values, our Skill Builders embarked on Education Tour of five relevant places this academic session. Without any doubt , the experiences of these excursions shall linger on in the minds of both the young learners and their teachers, ” he said.
