CHAN 2020: We were unlucky against Togo – Alimi

Lobi stars and Super Eagles B Striker Sikiru Alimi who netted a brace
in the 2-0 win against the Hawks of Togo at the Agege Stadium Lagos on
Saturday, has attributed the team’s failure to score more goals in
that CHAN 2020 qualifying second leg match to ill-luck.
The Eagles lost the first leg in Lome 4-1 and needed to win the
reverse fixture with at least three goals without conceding, but they
could only win 2-0 courtesy of a brace from Alimi.
The 2-0 win in Lagos saw the Imama Amapakabo’s team lose 4-3 on
aggregate, thus failed to book a spot at CHAN 2020 finals.
“It’s quite unfortunate that we couldn’t make it to CHAN 2020, though
we gave our all in both games. I think we got our tactics right, but
we were just unlucky,” Alimi told Completesports.com.
The striker scored four goals for the Super Eagles B in 2019, but he
regrets the team’s failure to secure a berth at Cameroon 2020 African
Nations Championship finals – a bigger stage he would have used to
aspire for invitation to Gernot Rohr’s main team.Alimi added: “Yes, it
was a great feeling all through [scoring four goals], but so sad they
didn’t count in the end. Scoring goals alone isn’t enough reason to be
called up to the Senior national team, but if the coach sees other
qualities, then why not?”Asked whether or not he’ll stay with Lobi
stars for the new season, Alimi said: “I’m a player of Lobi stars for
now, and hopefully, will resume after the national assignment, I will
just take every game as they come, and continue to help my club
achieve things.”
