In this Interview with Acting Editor, Mumini AbdulKareem, MAI as he is popularly known, talks about his most dramatic day in court. Excerpts:
It was at the Court of Appeal and I was to move a motion for the extension of time to appeal against a judgment. But the judgment I attached, I didn’t certify all the pages and so I ran into problem. The opposing lawyer tried to exploit that opening of a sort and vehemently opposed my application. I initially never wanted to withdraw the motion because of the cost implication. Doing so will cost us a lot and the office will not be happy about it. The most challenging part of it was that my opponent was a younger colleague and he was hell-bent that the court should not grant my application. But the judges, I think most them were females surprisingly said they will grant my application even though they know what my opponent was saying was right that all the pages of the judgment I attached was supposed to be certified. When my opponent tried to oppose it, the judges insisted they will grant the application and told my opponent to look at me that I was looking nice as a lawyer, very neat and that my dressing was superb. It was so dramatic for me because dressing is not part of moving a motion. But when my opponent still insisted that it should not be granted, the judges threatened they will also withdraw his appeal that the complaint he was making about me; he also has it in the whole appeal he brought before them that not all his pages were certified. That was how the opposing lawyer later rescinded his position. Before I got home, the incident had been reported to my wife and everybody was just laughing. It was so funny.
