Muslims have been urged to show more commitment to the cause of Islam as they celebrate the New Islamic Calendar Year 1440 after Hijrah on Tuesday.
The National Coordinator of Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG), Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi gave the charge in a statement signed by him adding that Muslims must imbibe the lessons emanating from Hijrah and put them into practice in their daily lives.
According to him, such lessons include commitment and dedication to the cause of Islam, perseverance in the face of persecution and shunning all forms of idol-worship such as cultism, ritual-killing and lust for material wealth. They should be totally devoted to Allah and enjoin values and virtues at all times.
The group however called on government at all levels to as from 2019 include 1st day of Muharram every year as part of our public holidays to further cement the bond of unity among all Nigerians irrespective of ethnicity, religion, culture or geographical boundaries.
“Hijrah celebration in Nigeria started 40 years ago (1980) in Ilorin, Kwara State when Muslim Leaders from all parts of Nigeria began the Celebration of the commencement of 14th Century of Hijra.
“During the celebration, it was resolved that commencement of the new Islamic Calendar Year – 1st Muharram, should be marked annually with Mass Rally of Muslims in all State Capitals, with lectures, symposia and other Islamic activities to draw the attention of the masses to the significance of the event.”
