International Women’s Day: Saraki Calls for Collective Action on Women’s Empowerment

As the world marks International Women’s Day, former Nigeria Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki in a post on his X handle on Saturday, has called for concrete action to ensure women’s voices shape Nigeria’s future. In a message celebrating the day, Saraki emphasized the need for partnership between men and women to break barriers and create a more inclusive society.
Reflecting on the powerful influence of women in his life, Saraki stated: “As a son, I learnt resilience from my mother’s dogged persistence. As a husband, I am inspired by my wife’s daily courage in challenging the status quo. And as a father, I see my daughters redefine the status quo in their spheres of influence.”
Despite acknowledging the strength of Nigerian women, he stressed that their efforts alone are not enough and require broader societal support.
“Their collective strength is incredible, but it isn’t enough on its own—they need our partnership,” Saraki urged.
He called for action beyond mere symbolic recognition, advocating for policies and social changes that ensure women’s contributions are not only acknowledged but actively shape the nation’s development.
“On this #InternationalWomensDay, let’s move beyond polite applause and accelerate action. Let’s commit to building a Nigeria where women’s voices are not just heard, but shape the very direction of our society,” he said.
Saraki also challenged the notion that the fight for gender equality is solely a women’s issue, insisting that it is a collective responsibility.
“This isn’t solely a women’s fight—it’s on all of us to ensure that no woman’s potential is wasted and no girl’s dream is denied,” he stated.
