The family of the 19-year-old teenager, Iyangbe Jeffrey killed in a suspected cult-related attack at a football viewing centre in Coca-Cola, Ilorin on April 9, 202, are still grappling with the aftermath of the tragic incident. In a heart-wrenching account, the late teenager’s aunt, recounted the last moments of the young life cut short.

Jeffrey’s aunt, Mrs. Mary, revealed to National Pilot that she had warned him not to go out that fateful night, but his passion for football proved too strong to resist. “He was told not to go out that night, but it fell on deaf ears because the boy loves watching football, and his favourite club was playing that fateful night,” she said, her voice cracking with emotion.

Mrs. Mary’s words painted a poignant picture of a young life full of promise, truncated by senseless violence. “It’s just too much to bear,” she added, fighting back tears.

Abdullahi Taiwo, a close friend of Jeffrey’s, described him as a cool-headed soul who was not affiliated with any cult group. “He was a cool-headed boy, and I’m shocked to see him lying in a pool of blood. I couldn’t eat that night as I was still reeling from the shock. It’s like a nightmare that I wish would end,” Taiwo said, still reeling from the incident.

The community leader, Mogaji Yahaya, while speaking to National Pilot, expressed his shock and sadness over the incident, describing it as a first in the community. “The ugly incident was the first of its kind in our community. We’re still trying to come to terms with it. As a matter of fact, we have put some security measures to avert future occurrences,” he said declared.
