Unilorin VC seeks partnership with NUJ on students’ training

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Sulyman Age Abdulkareem has stressed the importance of practical oriented training for students to acquire well rounded education.
Towards this end, the VC sought partnership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the training of students of Mass Communication in the institution.
He made this known while receiving in audience the State Working Committee of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State Council led by the Chairman, Mallam Umar Abdulwahab.
Abdulkareem who noted that practical oriented training would make graduates fare better in the competitive labour market, adding that the Mass Communication students to gain more from people on the field.
However, Abdulkareem, who emphasised importance of information in human society, regretted that social media platforms were being used to propagate falsehood.
The Unilorin VC noted that it would be difficult to checkmate social media reports because the platforms had made everybody journalist even while many of them did not have requisite professional training.
He thanked the state council of NUJ for choosing him as a patron, assuring that the institution under his vice-chancellorship would do its best to partner with the union.
The state chairman of NUJ, Mallam Umar Abdulwahab, had earlier congratulated Abdulkareem on his appointment as the Unilorin helmsman and commended him for elevating Mr Kunle Akogun as substantive Director, Corporate Affairs Directorate of the university.
He said the union under his leadership was prioritizing safety of members against impunity, intimidation and harassment, pointing out that many members of the union had suffered one attack or the other.
Prior to his visit to the vice-chancellor, Abdulwahab in company of other members of the State Working Committee had earlier inaugurated the new executive of Unilorin Chapel of NUJ where Tajudeen Babamale emerged as chairman of the chapel.
