Amala Meal: Death toll rises to 8 in Ilorin
By Mike Adeyemi
Monday November 26, 2018 is another gloomy day in the diary of the Salaudeen Adisa family of Ile-Ologbin, Mogaji Ogo community, Yebumot area, Ilorin following the passing of three of the four patients on admission at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital after eating what appeared a poisonous amala meal, about two weeks ago.
The unfortunate incidence has increased the death toll in the family to eight out of the 10 people that reportedly ate the amala meal.
You will recall that this medium reported about two weeks ago the death of five members of the Adisa family while five others were in critical condition at the General Hospital, Ilorin after eating the meal.
Among those who died as a result of the alleged food poisoning two weeks ago are; Aisat Adisa, Kamurudeen Salaudeen and one 11-year-old girl.
Speaking in a telephone interview with our reporter on Tuesday, the immediate younger brother to the late head of the family, Muritala Adisa in an emotional laden voice said, “It is unfortunate that we lost another three out of those receiving treatment at the hospital, on Monday. We only have a member of the family left at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.
“We have decided not to say anything to the public over the matter again because it is painful that neither the state government nor well-meaning individuals or group have bothered to come to the aid of the family throughout the period of our agony,” he lamented.
When our reporter visited the family residence yesterday, the compound was under lock with nobody seen around the premises.
Meanwhile, when our reported contacted, the Kwara State Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Usman Kolo on the mobile phone, yesterday, to know the result of the yam flour samples taken from the family residence, he said, “We sent the yam flour samples out of Ilorin for lab analysis and as I speak with you, we are yet to get the result,” the Commissioner said.
Asked when the result is likely to be available, Kolo said he could not give a specific date yet.
Recall that one of the two survivors, 12-year-old boy, Khalid Hanafi was the first among the family to eat the meal but he was given a concoction as antidote after he complained of stomach pain. He was said to have vomited some substance after the concoction was administered on him.
