Africa’s COVID cases hit 11m, death toll stands at 246,584
…as cases decline, Nigeria records 22 new COVID infections, zero fatality

A total of 11,104,160 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Africa.
This is according to the latest update from the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
The specialised healthcare agency of the African Union (AU) said the COVID-19 death toll across the continent stands at 246,584, while 10,254,788 patients have recovered.
South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Ethiopia are said to be among the countries with the most cases on the continent.
According to the agency, South Africa has 3,654,824 cases, followed by Morocco with 1,158,145 cases, Tunisia has 979,612 and Libya has recorded 482,153 cases.
In terms of caseload, the agency said Southern Africa is the most affected region, followed by the northern and eastern parts of the continent, while central Africa is the least affected region.
Meanwhile, in Nigeria, 254,243 coronavirus cases have been recorded across the country, out of which 230,587 patients have recovered.
Nigeria’s daily COVID-19 count maintained a relatively low figure on Saturday — with 22 new cases confirmed in five states and the federal capital territory (FCT).
Saturday’s figure is a 43.5 percent decrease over the past 24 hours — 39 new cases reported on Friday.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) published the new cases in its update for February 19, 2021.
Lagos recorded the most cases on Saturday with 13 new positive samples, followed by Osun with four and Kaduna with two.
Other states with new infections are Ekiti (1), FCT (1), and Oyo (1).
The fatality toll remains 3,142— as the agency reported no new death on Saturday.
Meanwhile, 38 patients were confirmed to have been discharged across the country on Saturday.
Of the new recoveries, 25 were community discharged cases reported from FCT.
A total of 254,243 coronavirus cases have now been recorded across the country, out of which 230,587 patients have recovered.
