Group Demands Probe into KWASSIP over Allegations of Politicization, Lack of Transparency

A civil society organization, the Kwara Advancement Initiative (KAI), has called for an investigation into the Kwara State Social Investment Programme (KWASSIP), amid allegations of exploitation and politicization. The group is urging authorities to ensure accountability and transparency in the program’s operations.
In a statement issued by the Head of KAI’s Democratic Mobilization and Monitoring Desk, Hajia Adeola Bashiru, the organization expressed concern over claims that KWASSIP’s processes have been compromised, with favoritism and partisan politics allegedly tainting the program. KAI called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to launch a comprehensive investigation into KWASSIP.
“The selection criteria for beneficiaries and the procedures used by KWASSIP must be scrutinized to prevent favoritism and ensure equity, justice, and fairness,” the group emphasized. According to KAI, any investigation should extend to the fund disbursement process, financial management, and the possibility of political bias within the program.
“Furthermore, KWASSIP’s financial records, including budget allocation, expenditure, and auditing practices, demand thorough review,” the group added.
A key point of concern raised by KAI is the recent conduct of KWASSIP’s Acting Director-General, Dr. Abdulwasiu Tejidini. The group claims that Tejidini’s actions, which allegedly include welcoming opposition party members into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) during official business at KWASSIP offices, have “compromised the agency’s credibility.” According to KAI, this conduct demonstrates a clear “diversion from KWASSIP’s core mission,” and suggests state funds are being misused for partisan political purposes.
“This blatant abuse of power undermines trust and mandates an immediate separation of politics from State social intervention programmes,” KAI stated, condemning Tejidini’s involvement in political activities while overseeing a state-funded welfare program.
To restore public confidence and ensure KWASSIP remains focused on its original mandate, KAI is advocating for governance reforms. The group recommends stronger oversight mechanisms and the establishment of transparent, merit-based criteria for selecting loan recipients. Additionally, they urge regular audits and more rigorous financial reporting to promote accountability.
“Transparent, merit-based criteria for loan recipients must be established, and regular audits and financial reporting will ensure accountability and transparency in financial management,” the statement said.
KAI further stressed the need for the EFCC and ICPC to take immediate action, stating that the people of Kwara State deserve better and that transparency, accountability, and good governance must be upheld in public programs like KWASSIP.
