Smuggling: Kwara Customs seizes 10,201 bags of foreign rice, tramadol, others

The Kwara State command of the Nigeria Customs Service said it had seized over 10,000 bags of rice in its ongoing border drill in the state illegally imported into the country from neighbouring countries through the border communities.

The Joint Border Operation Drill Coordinator, North Central Zone command, Comptroller Muhammed Garba made this revelation in Ilorin while speaking on the activities of the command adding that smuggling remain a crime and the operation will continue to treat offenders as a criminal.

According to him, the command in its efforts to have safer borders have seized 10,201 bags of foreign rice of 50kg with duty value of N173, 417,000.00, 52 vehicles, 561 drums of petrol, 1,670 tablets of 200mg tramadol 1,524 Jerri cans filled with petrol, 11 motorcycles use for smuggling activities and 94 pieces of poisonous Charlie tooth paste.

He added that 68 tins of Jago condensed milk, 80 pieces of washing soap, 128 poisonous ‘read a dream’ insecticide, 85 kegs of vegetable oil of 25 litre, 19 bales of second hand clothing and shoes and 42 sacks of female hand bags.

Garba noted that over N7billion was being generated daily as duties on imported goods from the initial N4.5 billion before commencement of the joint operation in August last year.

He gave the worth of the custom duty on the 52 vehicles which include trucks and trailers used for conveying contraband goods as over N88m.

“One Thousand Six Hundred and Seventy Thousand (1,670) tablets of Tramadol of 200mg each and Two Packs of Rebozel Drugs Containing 500 tablet each with cost value of N156m which has been handed to NAFDAC”, he added.

He said during the period under review, two hundred and four (204) illegal migrants were repatriated which included 99 Nigeriens, 100 Beniniose, 3 Malians and 2 Chinese.

“Eleven (11) suspects were arrested in connection to these seizures and were released on administrative bail.

He explained that, “the eagle-eyes of the Joint Border Operators and superior intelligence sharing/utilisations will continue to cause unrepentant smugglers nightmares.
