The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Haruna Tambiri has reacted to the allegation that the state government is planning to use the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC) to perfect a smooth return to power by the APC in the state.
The commissioner in an exclusive chat with Pilot Politics yesterday debunked the allegation, saying the state government is not planning to use the exercise for any advantage for whatever reason.
According to him, the allegation is baseless because KWSIEC has a statutory power to stand on its own and its officials are credible to conduct the poll without any interference from any side.
He added that the government will only be providing some logistics to ensure smooth running of the exercise.
“I’m a commissioner and a politician, I can speak authoritatively on some issues that pertains to politics in the state.
“The only aspect where state government will be participating is to facilitate the ground for smooth running of the election, to give security, venues and the likes where and when necessary.
Tambiri further beckoned on the electorate in the state to go to the poll peacefully and cast their vote for party of their choice.
He stressed further that election in a democratic society is about choice, and likeness, adding that no politician should suppress the other, ‘they should all go to the poll to put their candidature to test”, he added.
There had been accusation and counter accusations between the APC and the opposition party in the state over alleged plans to rig the poll by the ruling party.
But the APC had reiterated that it was on ground and challenged the PDP and other opposition party to come to the field rather than making noise on radio.
