Ex-convict kills friend over N200 debt in Ilorin

Residents of Oko-Olowo area of Ilorin were stunned yesterday when a man in his early 20s simply identified as Sulu Kanaini was killed by an unidentified ex-convict and resident of Omoda area, Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State, over N200 debt.

Argument was said to have ensued between the two friends, a development that saw the ex-convict reach out for his knife to stab Kanaini in the neck.

According to an eye witness who pleaded anonymity, the incident occurred around 7am yesterday after the suspect demanded for his N200 debt from the deceased.

“In the process of agitating for the money, a fight ensued between the two friends. The suspect knocked the deceased down and stabbed him in the neck.

“The incident took us by surprise because the deceased yesterday (Tuesday) bought items worth N2,000 for the suspect which he handed over to him today,” the eye witness divulged.

Speaking further, he said, “Sulu’s elder brother, Sheu asked him to come to visit him in Oshogbo today (Wednesday) but unfortunately it was his lifeless body that his brother met.”

In an effort to save his life, Sulu was said to have been rushed to the General Hospital, Ilorin  for medical attention but he was confirmed dead at the hospital.

His remains was taken to the ‘G Division’ police station at Oloje where it was later collected by the family before being buried at the Muslim Cemetery, Osere after Islamic injunctions.

According to the eyewitness, Sulu had sometimes cheated death after being stabbed in another fight.

He however said the ex-convict is presently in police net after residents of Oko-Olowo informed security operatives about the incidence.

When contacted, the Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ajayi Okasanmi confirmed the incident.

“Two people were fighting over N200 and one of them died during the fight.

“Investigation is currently going on and the suspect is under police custody,” Okasanmi said.

 


…12-yr-old gang-raped in Ilorin

A 12-year-old girl (name withheld) was gang-raped by three middle-aged men at Osere area, Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

For committing the heinous act, a magistrate court sitting in Ilorin, yesterday remanded 25-year-old, Tosin Fagbemi and Majeed Babatunde, 40 while their accomplice identified as Tunde, is presently at large.

Fagbemi and Babatunde were charged for criminal conspiracy and unlawful sexual intercourse with a child, contrary to section 96 of penal code law and section 31 (1), (2) & (3) of Kwara State Child’s rights law 2006 law.

Though Babatunde was not in court as he was said to be receiving treatment in a hospital due to the treatment melted on him by the angry mob who apprehended him.

The Police First Information Report (FIR) revealed that the mother of the victim reported the matter to the Police before it was referred to Anti-Human Trafficking, Women and Children Protection for secret investigation.

The Police report noted that the complainant who resides at Osere area, Ilorin reported that on 7th January, 2019, her daughter was attacked while going home by the second accused person, Fagbemi who also resides in the same address.

According to the FIR, Fagbemi took the girl to a room where the first accused person, Babatunde and Tunde whose surname and address is still unknown forcefully had sexual intercourse with her.

In the course of the investigation, Babatunde confessed to the crime and being the only one who had canal knowledge of her.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Oderinde Abideen informed the court that the offence of the accused person is not ordinarily bailable.

He also urged the court to remand the accused pending the time police investigation will be completed on the matter.

On his part, counsel to the accused person, A.Y Sulyman informed the court that he will come formally for bail application of his client.

Magistrate Esther Kikelomo Abu in his short ruling, however said he will not take oral application from the accused person’s counsel. He therefore adjourned the suit to 29th January, 2019.
