A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been arrested for allegedly stealing tubers of yams from farms within Osi community in Ekiti Local Government of Kwara State.
The incident trended on many social media platforms during the week and the victim was reportedly paraded around the community.
Although the chairman of the APC in Osi, Olawale Awelewa denied that such incident took place, a top member of the party in the ward who is conversant with the incident confirmed the development last night, adding that he is Publicity Secretary of the party in the ward.
He however declined to give further details about the incident.
Speaking with our reporter, Awelewa had said he would make further enquiry to ascertain the true situation but did not get back to this reporter before the paper went to bed in the early hours of Thursday (today).
Efforts to get his name and other particulars were not successful last night but it was gathered that he was popularly known as Ologbojo from ward I in the community and had since been handed over to the police in Osi.
It was not clear whether he had been released by the police last night.
Speaking on the issue, the Olosi of Osi, Oba Adasofegbe Saliu confirmed the incident but said he was not aware whether the culprit belongs to any political party.
“After he was paraded (around the community) to expose him as someone who steals our people’s tubers of yams, they handed him over to the police. In the last three days, the community was under siege of nefarious activities of thieves and we prayed to God to expose them and He answered our prayers.
“The rate at which they were breaking into shops and houses in the community carting away property was alarming and we beseech the Almighty God for assistance. We dont care about who he may be and whatever party he may belong to, our concern is that he’s a thief and will be treated as such. The police have taken over the case”, the monarch added.
