Why Kwara must sustain Civil Service Games

It was indeed cheering to see public servants in Kwara State take to
the field and tracks to compete favourably with their compatriots from
other agencies in the recently concluded Civil Service Games.
For about two weeks, some of the civil servants who work under
difficult conditions and had time out to interact with their
colleagues.  Until the recently held Games, some members of the state
workforce have consistently endured the routine of retiring home after
the close of work without having time to exercise their bodies.
The Civil Service Games beyond helping the participants to keep fit
will also help the workforce to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship.
It also allows the workers to showcase their talents in different
sporting activities.
More importantly, the Civil Service Games will enhance
inter-ministries and agencies relationships in Kwara State and it is
expected that participation will increase yearly, depending on the
standard.
Additionally, the competition will encourage psycho-motor development
of a healthy and alert workforce towards the provision of effective
and efficient service delivery to Kwarans and other residents of the
State of Harmony.
The Civil Service Games helps to improve or rather boost staff morale
and team building. It encourages civil servants to get active in ways
that appeal to them while fostering a spirit of friendly, fun and
healthy competition.
It is imperative that ministries, agencies and parastatals work
closely in order to create a more physically active state and nation,
where people of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy the many benefits
that sports and physical activities bring at every stage in their
lives.
In truth, this year’s Civil Service Games was a positive development.
However, there is indeed enough room for improvement.
Going forward, the office of the Head of Service (HoS) in the state
must seek to improve the standard of the competition and also add more
track and field events to it in addition to some indoor and outdoor
activities to increase participation.
Also, to ensure better competition and massive participation across
board, the state government must come up with a better rewarding
system. This could be through financial reward, promotion or star
prizes for outstanding athletes at the Civil Service Games.
In addition, various ministries and agencies must provide their
athletes top rated kits plus bonuses and allowances.
Finally, the Kwara State Government should consider renaming the
competition the Head of Service Games (HoS Games).
With all the aforesaid suggestions taken into cognisance, the Kwara
State Government can be assured of a more healthy and productive
workforce.
