By Ahmed Ajikobi
The Magaji Nda of Ilorin Alhaji Soliu Woru Muhammed has charged the Kwara State government and well meaning individuals in the state to support the state security agencies in fighting crime in the state.
The retired Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) stressed that security agencies in the state needed support of everybody, adding that crime fighting is not a one-man show.
While speaking with our reporter, he said, nobody should expect police to perform magic ” but if you want them to perform, you have to support them with vital information to be able to fight against criminals in the state.
“Criminals live among us, criminals are human beings. Let me commend the Commissioner of Police, he’s a very professional police officer and very effective and hardworking, but no one is perfect ,there was crime before he came.
“The duty of the police is to reduce crime to the barest minimum. They need funding. The state and individuals should support them. The state government should assist the police, NDLEA and other
security agencies. I saw it on TV when Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State was giving vehicles to the police.
“When Bukola Saraki was Governor of Kwara State, he bought many operational vehicles and mobile phones for the police and he also gave them motivation. Also, the past governor of the state complemented the effort of the Federal Government, same as the present governor, I heard he bought some vehicles for the police as well, so I think our governors have been living up to the expectations.
“police have their own budget, but the state government has a duty to complement effort of the Federal Government, it’s not enshrined in the constitution,so it is not a must because they do not have control over the police.
“The state government has the duty to complement with logistics such as vehicles and accommodations.
“According to the constitution, the police are saddled with six responsibilities, which are, to prevent crime, they have rights to apprehend offender, They also have the power to prosecute the offender, they have power to protect live and property, they can also perform military duties as it could be assigned to them by the president of the federal republic of Nigeria, they also have a duty to perform community service, that is why they were created and established, apart from those duties, the police are not allowed to perform any other duties ”
