By Adebayo Olodan, Mumini Abdulkareem, Matthew Denis, Kayode Adeoti and Mike Adeyemi
The Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has denied reports that there were two parallel congresses across local governments in the state on Saturday.
A faction led by a former House of Representatives member, Olayemi Olabanji had reportedly held another congress different from the one held by the recognised executives of the APC in the state.
But speaking on the issue with our reporter last night, the party’s Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Sulyman Buhari said there were no parallel congresses in the state even as he challenged the said factional group to produce the list of their newly elected executives.
According to the party’s spokesman, the state chapter of INEC supervised the exercise including the national officials from the headquarters of the APC who also monitored the exercise across venues in the state.
“There was no parallel congress in Kwara. After we finished our exercise, we announced and made public names of candidates that emerged across the state. But in their case, there was nothing of such.
“The party will take the right steps at the appropriate time. But as far as we are concerned, there was no parallel congress in Kwara State,” he submitted.
However the Publicity Secretary of the “legacy group faction of the party”, Kayode Oyin-Zubair said although the exercise were held across the state, he was seconded to monitor the party’s congress at Kwara Central adding that everything went peacefully.
He said the faction made payment to the national leadership of the party for the form used and listed Oke-Oyi, Eyenkorin, Tanke and Offa, among others where the exercise took place.
He said the party is awaiting the full list of the results of the exercise in other local governments, today (Monday).
Asked to name officials of the state chapter of the INEC and the national officials that monitored the exercise, Oyin-Zubair said the commission is in the best position to speak on that.
When contacted, the state PRO of INEC, Barr. Jacob Ayanda said he could not comment on the issue for now until he gets report from the officials that went to the field.
Oyin-Zubair had earlier released a statement and expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the congress.
“Reports reaching the situation room as it concerns the ongoing local government congress in the 16 local government areas of the state have been very satisfactory.
“We are getting reports from our monitors at the local government areas and we are really satisfied that at the end of the day it will throw up credible personalities across the state.
“It is a clear departure from what was experienced last weekend when we had the ward congress. The ward congress was rather unfortunate when party constitution and congress was flagrantly trampled.
“We are on top of the situation and urge our members to remain steadfast and calm even in the face of any provocation.
“What we are doing is the sacrifice necessary for democracy to grow and we are equally committed to deepen internal democracy within our party,” he said.
How the exercise was held across the state
