Kwara FRSC arrests 2176 for reckless driving, speed limit device in one month

The Federal Road Safety Corps, Kwara State Command has arrested 2,166 for reckless driving and for not having speed limit device, among other offences in one month.

This was made known to this medium during an exclusive interview with the Commander, Uchechukwu Wihioka in his office, on Tuesday.

According to him, the arrests were made between December 2018 and January 2019 for noncompliance to the rules and regulation of the command.

 Wihioka said 1,235 traffic offenders were arrested in December while 926 others were arrested across the state in January 2019.
The commander said that five other traffic offenders were also nabbed for not installing speed limit device in their vehicles.

“An order has been given to everyone to install speed limit device in their vehicles. This is to regulate any form of speed by the driver.

“There are companies that produce the speed limit devices and also do the installation,” he said.

Speaking further, Wihioka said, “If Nigerian drivers especially those company that deals with transportation most can install speed limit device in their vehicles and maintain them, it will go a long way in reducing road crashes.

According to the FRSC boss, 39 crashes were recorded in Kwara State between December 2018 and January 2019. He added that the accidents occurred mostly around Oloru, Bode Saadu, Jebba axis.

He blamed impatient of drivers, recklessness and influence of alcohol and drugs for the crashes.

“Impatience on the part of drivers most especially drivers of the bigger trucks have continued to increase death toll on our roads.”

Wihioka, however pleaded with road users to drive cautiously and to ensure their vehicles are in good condition at all times.

When asked why there was an increase in the number of road crashes in January, the FRSC boss said it was as a result of the huge number of people return to their destinations after travelling to their hometowns during the yuletide period.
