Kwara Assembly summons Perm Sec, GM over water scarcity

The Kwara House of Assembly, yesterday, summoned the Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Water Resources, Dr Afolabi Ezekiel and the General Manager of Water Corporation, Alhaji Tunde Yahaya over the lingering water scarcity in Ilorin.
The directive was contained in its resolution after considering a motion of notice on the need to improve palliative measures on water supply to residents of the Ilorin metropolis.
The motion without notice was sponsored by Hon lshiaku Aliyu Adams of Edu constituency and it enjoyed the support of members who contributed during the debate.
According to Adams, since 2011 to date, water tankers in ministry has reduced from 15 to only four fleet.
He added that the ministry hired six in addition to four tankers in order to supply to 50 points in Ilorin adding that the volume is grossly in adequate in the city not to talk of extending the gesture to adjoining villages that are also in need of water.
The Speaker, Dr Ali Ahmad while reading the resolution said the two officials summoned would brief the House on the circumstances that led to reduction in number of tankers supplying water to various parts of the state capital.
The two officials in charge of water administration in the state were directed to appear before the House Committee on Agriculture and Water Resources on Monday, 29 January, 2018.
The House directed the Committee to brief the lawmakers on the status of work aimed at restoring normal water supply from the Water Works to all parts of Ilorin and level of work on the ongoing reticulation project.
The Committee has one week to report back to the House.
Also during Wednesday plenary the House urged the state government to provide logistics support to enhance smooth operation of the N-Power programme in the state, for successful indigenes.
This was contained in a resolution after considering a motion of notice on reviewing the status of N-Power in Kwara State sponsored by AbdulRafiu AbdurRahman of Ilorin North West.
In the resolution, the House said the state stand to benefit an inflow of about N220m every month from the Federal Government in solving the problem of unemployment.
It however called on relevant N-Power stakeholders and other operating authorities in the state to ensure that the process of verification of beneficiaries and collations are well coordinated.
