In a bid to ensure healthy life and sanitary environment in the state,
the Kwara State Government on Tuesday commissioned three integrated
modern toilets in Ilorin.
This was in commemoration of the 2019 World Toilet Day as part of the
programmes to create awareness against open defecation across the
state.
Speaking during the occasion, the state Governor, Abdulrahman
Abdulrazaq stressed that he is operating an inclusive government to
ensure cleanliness of the environment where people can boast of
healthy life.
The Governor who was represented by the Secretary to the State
Government (SSG), Prof. Mamman Shaba Jibril said it has been observed
that some residents defecate openly which is not hygienic to the
society.
According to him, the modern toilets will help in curbing pollution of
the environment.
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment,
Alhaji Amosa Isiaka Al-Amin emphasised that the material for the
construction of three modern toilets were sourced locally with direct
labour.
He noted that the toilets will be commercialised to ensure proper
usage under strict monitoring by the ministry.
“We have done our findings and discovered that the cost of using
public toilets in other states runs between N150 to N250 but we have
decided to charge N50 per usage in Kwara.”
According to him, patronage by the people will reduce air pollution
and promote healthy living.
He tasked various communities to collaborate with state government in
ensuring effective maintenance of the facilities in their domains.
